Runaway

Good morning!  How was everyone’s weekend?  I know mine was crazy busy, but it was a lot of fun.  My sister graduated from college and I am so proud of her!

We are back with another story for Dee at Grammy’s Grid.  I want to thank her for the feature from her last Short Story Link Party!  If you didn’t read Nightmare, which was my story for the party, click here.  And if you want to read the other stories for this prompt, click on this link here.

So for this story the writing prompt goes as follows:

As she stopped to catch her breath, she looked back

This story is labeled as Adventure, though it may be slightly Dark as well.  I hope you enjoy!

Runaway

Runaway

As she stopped to catch her breath, she looked back to see the figure still following her.  Brynn ran.  She ran even though she was exhausted.  She knew why the figure was following her and all she knew was that she was terrified.

Brynn continued down the street when she saw an alleyway coming up on her left.  She quickly turned, almost running into a large dumpster that was sitting against the wall.  Once she looked up she saw it was a dead end.  She started to panic.  Where was she going to go?  Her eyes scanned everywhere to see if there was any sort of escape.

That when she saw the door.

There was a door that blended in with the wall, sporting the same grey tone as the cement building.  There wasn’t a handle on the outside but there was a small window near the top.  The bottom of the door had a large metal plate, almost as if someone had damaged it and the owner didn’t want the door to be damaged even more.

Brynn ran over to the door and started pounding on it.  She hit the door with her fist multiple times, hoping to get an answer.  The small window opened.  “Password.”

“Uh…”  Brynn looked toward the entry of the alley, unsure of how much time she had.  “Please.  I need your help.  I need a place to hide.  Please.  Please help me.”

The door creaked open and an arm reached out and grabbed her.  She was dragged inside a dark room containing nothing more than a single light.  A large shadowy figure stood before her.  “State your name.”

Brynn swallowed.  “I’m Brynn.  Thank you for helping me.”

The shadowy figure took a step forward into the light.  He was tall and thin and he wore a white shirt and brown suspenders.  He looked like he should be writing a newspaper article about something, not doing whatever he was doing.  His face was very solemn, not giving many emotions.  “I am Eric.  What are you running from?”

She frowned.  “I’m…”

Suddenly a loud commotion came about from the door they had walked through.  There was a lot of pounding, almost like what Brynn had done but much louder and harder.  She heard some bellowing from outside, like the person who wanted in was incredibly unhappy.  “Let me in!  I know she’s in there!”

Tears started to fill Brynn’s eyes.  “Please don’t let him in.  He’s a monster.  I cannot work for him anymore.  He will kill me.”

The room was instantly filled with light as the door was broken open.  Brynn ran, trying to find her way through this building.  A shot rang out through the building as Brynn continued to try to find her way out of the maze.  She found a small room and quickly hid inside, praying that she wouldn’t be found.

Brynn hugged her knees to her chest as she sat in the small room.  She didn’t want to be seen or heard and be found.  Her hand covered her mouth to try to eliminate any loud breathing.

The silent room was slowly filled with loud pounding footsteps.  Brynn sat closer to the corner, hoping for some reason she wouldn’t be found.  The footsteps stopped.  Brynn started to pray harder.  The door flew open revealing the man that she was running from, his sinister smile filling most of his face.  “Did you think you could run away from me?  Did you really think that I wouldn’t be able to find you?  You have a chip in your head that I can track.  I have tracked every movement of yours from the moment that you ran away.  So you really couldn’t hide from me.”

He drew his gun and pointed it at her head.  “I bet you forgot that I could track you.  But, trust me you giant piece of metal, I found you.  And now you will be out of commission.”  The sound of the gun shot resonated through the building as the bullet entered Brynn’s head.  All the light drained out of her body, her eyes quickly flashing before going dark.  The man grabbed her foot and dragged her robot body through the building and out the door where he had entered.  Her body was thrown in the dumpster outside the building, letting her rust where she had been laid to rest.

  2. Wow. Poor thing. I feel like even she, a robot, has feelings. She was terrified, scared, and wanted to ‘live’. Suspenseful, well-written read.
